Notes from the CEO
Love Your City, the Key to Progress
On the morning of the EMERGE Summit, Five Star Bank had the pleasure of hosting the event’s keynote speaker Peter Kageyama, author of “For the Love of Cities,” at breakfast. While he spent the afternoon speaking to the more than 500 young professionals from our region who attended EMERGE, he spent the morning speaking to what he lovingly referred to as the “EPs” or the “Experienced Professionals.” We were joined by community and business leaders from throughout the greater Sacramento area who heard Kageyama’s message about what makes cities lovable, what motivates citizens to do extraordinary things for their places and how some cities use that energy to fill in the gaps that “official’ city makers have left open when resources disappear.
I thought that Peter’s message about loving our city was important to hear for two main reasons. First of all, in our experience as community and business leaders, we have recognized that the Sacramento area is an ideal place to live, work and play. This is the place where I have grown my career, raised my family, and where I plan to leave a legacy of progress. I love the Sacramento region and all it has to offer. When outsiders look in and see a community that is supportive and takes pride in itself, it results in greater opportunity for economic development.
Second, I thought it would be important for us to hear the message that our young professionals in the region were going to be inspired with. Peter’s main message to us regarding the “YPs” was, “Get out of their way!” These young professionals are the up and coming entrepreneurs, city leaders, and change makers – let them try their crazy ideas to make this city more loveable.
At Five Star Bank, we are all about changing for progress, helping people make their dreams become a reality. We sent many of our own young professionals to be inspired. We hope these YPs choose to make their dreams come true here in the greater Sacramento area.
